Kurt Kragthorpe: Changing of guard sparks first Jazz victory

Apparently, locating a point guard at a Wal-Mart in Des Moines and playing opponents with "New Orleans" on their jerseys were all the Jazz needed to avoid making franchise history of the wrong kind.

The Jazz rallied from 16 points behind in the second half Wednesday night to win, 111-105. How did they do it? By benching their starting point guard, relying on a veteran whose biggest contribution supposedly is fulfilling minimum payroll requirements and turning the fourth quarter over to a player who officially joined the team about six hours before tipoff at Energy Solutions Arena.

And here was Diante Garrett, looking at the scoreboard during the closing stretch of his new team's first victory and wondering what was going on.
"Time's going down, I'm still in the game," Garrett marveled. "I guess I had to keep playing."

Summoned from the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League, Garrett played 22 minutes and posted seven points and five assists - basically matching the combined averages of John Lucas III (benched at halftime) and Jamaal Tinsley (waived Tuesday) in the Jazz's eight losses to begin the season.

It would make a better story if Garrett had been stocking shelves at Wal-Mart, in the Iowa tradition of former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner. Instead, he was merely grocery shopping late Monday night when the call came, saying the Jazz were interested in signing him after releasing Tinsley.

Tinsley is a fellow Iowa State alumnus. "Out with the old, in with the new," said Garrett, not as harshly as that sentiment may appear in print.

Improbable? There's more. The Jazz scored 38 points in the fourth quarter. Richard Jefferson and Gordon Hayward combined for 39 points in the second half, with Hayward dishing a career-high 10 assists in the game. The Jazz made their last four 3-point attempts after having shot 23 percent for the season, until then.

Asked what satisfied him the most, Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said, "The ball going in the hole."

That helps, certainly. The sudden offensive success kept the 1974-75 New Orleans Jazz, who lost the franchise's first 11 games, permanently in the record book.

When Corbin arrived at the arena, a security guard told him, "Tonight's the night."

It hardly looked that way early in the third quarter. Trailing by 10 points, the Jazz spent barely five minutes in the locker room at halftime, but Corbin made a significant change.

Lucas, whose 0-for-7, zero-assist first half included six 3-point misses, was replaced at the point by Alec Burks - even though Corbin had said pregame that playing two positions "throws his game off."

The Jazz promptly fell behind by 16, causing Corbin to call a timeout and clap his hands three times in disgust as he walked onto the court. "How You Like Me Now?" probably was not the best choice for the timeout music.

Whatever Corbin said worked, though. Jefferson, whose prime value was thought to be an $11 million contract that expires is April, responded in a big way. So did Hayward, who has soldiered through the Jazz's rough start like no other player.

當爵士落後16分,烤餅拍掌三次喊暫停,「How You Like Me Now?」

Garrett, meanwhile, atoned for a critical turnover by assisting Marvin Williams for a 3-pointer that made it 104-100 with 1:22 left. Garrett later wriggled out of trouble and passed to Derrick Favors, who drove for a clinching layup.

So for the moment, I can cease with the comparisons to the '74-75 New Orleans Jazz, who went through 22 players in that first season.

And for one night, Jazz fans could have fun, while embracing a refreshing, new player - even before Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins arrives in June. The postgame music selection? "All Right Now."

All Right Now!

[舊聞] The Jazz stink- and it's a wonderful thing 爵士臭酸-但是件美好的事

It was quiet in the Jazz locker room late Monday night. As defeat hung thick in the air, only whispers were heard, as though Derrick Favors and Gordon Hayward and Rudy Gobert were studying at the school library.

The fans already had filed out of EnergySolutions Arena, many before the final seconds slid off the clock. Another loss, this one to (fill in the blank, it really doesn't matter) had gotten almost everybody's dobber down.

It shouldn't have.
The Jazz now are oh-fer in their first eight outings, heading into games against the Pelicans on Wednesday and the Spurs on Friday - and those will likely be losses, too.
There's only one word to describe the situation here …
Perfect.

It's OK. It really is. Keep reminding yourself this season is different than any you've ever experienced. Up is down, down is up, wins are losses, losses are wins … do-do-do-do, you've entered the Twilight Zone. You've entered the land of the Bobcats, with one exception: Jazz management actually knows what it's doing to extricate itself. It has a plan, a good plan, a plan that can help the club navigate the jagged realities for a small-market team in the NBA.

It can't get a star in free agency, so get him through the draft.
It's up to that management to make the correct decisions presented by their plan, but the plan itself is sound … unless basketball fans around here want to fight for the final playoff spot in the West every year. And they don't. They want to legitimately contend. This is the dark way to that contention. It's the only way.

If the locker room seemed like a library, that's what it should be - a place for young minds and young bodies to learn lessons well. Kevin Durant learned those same lessons not so long ago.
According to the standings, the Jazz are the worst team in the league, the only team without a win. Everyone else, except Sacramento, has at least two wins. Phoenix and Philadelphia are leading their divisions. Let the phools have their pholly.
The Jazz are taking the direct path.

After gaining the lead late against the Nuggets on Monday night, they got outscored by 30 points. They missed shots, they fumbled the ball away, they had more turnovers than assists. They did what they've been doing since the seasonstarted - they played 4-on-5.

With Trey Burke still sidelined with a broken finger - the rookie will start workouts and be reevaluated in a couple of weeks - the Jazz could find no fuel at the most important position on the floor: point guard. Right now, they have no point guard. No offense to John Lucas or Jamaal Tinsley, but those guys bring no offense - or defense. It really is as though the Jazz, every night, are
playing a man down, and in the NBA that gets you beat every night.

Against the Nugs, Lucas and Tinsley combined for four points and five assists while Ty Lawson and Andre Miller totaled 32 points and 11 assists. The Jazz have to continue to take advantage of that lopsided situation at the point - by losing at every opportunity. They'll probably keep on losing once Burke is back because he has his lessons to learn, too.

The only risk along this path is if the young promising players get discouraged in defeat. But their whispers said otherwise on Monday night.
"I'm good, man," said Favors, who had 21 points, 13 boards and 3 blocked shots.
"Just got to stay positive, keep working hard, and get through it. We'll get a win sooner or later. Got to keep playing hard. Everybody's staying together. I feel good about my game, I feel comfortable. We're just going through a rough stretch, but we're staying motivated."

Said Ty Corbin: "The guys are great. They're frustrated with losing. We understand we have to get better in situations. We're making some mistakes that are costing us, but they're still fighting and I'm pleased with that. This group of guys won't quit."

Richard Jefferson, a 13-year veteran, said the Jazz know they're not a good team right now, but confidence isn't lacking: "It's just us not executing the way we need to."
Asked about what players must do to weather what he called a "perfect storm," Jefferson said, "You have to be a man. We're paid to perform." He added that, as presently constituted, the Jazz are "young men … you have to go through this… we have quality, talented young players. There's a lot of great young players in this league who are now all-stars that are carrying playoff teams that struggled early on. …

"You don't see us holding our heads, we're not fighting, we're not arguing with coaches. There's not a fragile psyche. We just got to get a win."
They don't even need that.
They just have to improve as time goes on and keep a good attitude. They have to survive - and pick the right player in next year's draft. Everybody outside the locker room has to forget about winning, stay focused on the plan and enjoy the ride.

Ex-Jazz ball boy selling Jordan's shoes from legendary 'Flu Game" 爵士球僮背主記

If it wasn't the shoes, it might have been the applesauce.

For 15 years, a safe-deposit box in a Davis County bank has housed a pair of size 13's that could put a dent in the national debt. Yet all it took for Preston Truman to earn the sneakers Michael Jordan wore during his legendary "flu game" was a little courage and some applesauce cups.

The former Jazz ball boy's tale began in November 1996, with Truman standing slack-jawed while Jordan tied his shoes before a regular-season game.

"Hey," Jordan called to Chicago Bulls trainer Chip Schaefer. "Where are my graham crackers and applesauce?"

This was, it seems, important.

Schaefer stopped taping another player's ankle and searched his bag: Graham crackers, but no sauce. So Jordan turned to Truman.

"There will be no autographs for ball boys after the game if I don't get my applesauce."

Thus, with 45 minutes until the tip, Truman set off on a reckless dash through the Delta Center. Shouting "I'm looking for applesauce for Michael Jordan," he came up empty on floors one and two, but on the third floor a woman in a food-storage room gave him an industrial-size can. He procured a spoon and a
can opener and sprinted back to present it all to a grinning Jordan.

"You came through," he said, and asked the ball boy's name.
The Bulls lost that night, and MJ was slightly sour when, on the way out, he passed a table of items that people were hoping he'd sign. But he saw Truman and stopped to autograph a trading card the 18-year-old had in his pocket. "Maybe I'll see you in June," he told him.

Well, what do you know?
Truman was assigned to the visitor's locker room for Games 3, 4 and 5, and he hatched a plan. He wanted shoes - not just Jordans, for which people in the '90s would camp outside Foot Locker, but Jordan's. He asked his mom to buy some graham crackers and Seneca Apple Sauce cups, and he had them waiting in MJ's locker when he walked in.

"You remembered?" Jordan asked. "That's my guy right there. It's Preston, right?"

He managed not to squeal. "Yes, sir, I'm here to take care of you."

Jordan said he appreciated that.

Before one game, when Jordan was sitting on the trainer's table, a KSL ad came on the TV. Jazz forward Antoine Carr channeled Rod Tidwell from "Jerry Maguire," imploring Utah celebrities to ask him to "Show me the title!"
MJ looked up.
"He said, 'I'll show you the f---ing title,'" Truman says. "It's moments like that where you sort of pinch yourself."
Show Me The Title" KSL TV 1997

The Jazz won twice to even the series 2-2, and Jordan's food poisoning was evident as doctors and trainers checked his vitals before Game 5. He lay down in a back room with an IV and asked them to turn the lights off as they left.

Truman walked in. He almost turned back when he saw Jordan's eyes were closed, but His Airness had sensed him and asked that he run some tickets to will call.

First, though, Truman leaned in and whispered - wondering whether this was a remotely sane thing to do - "Are you doing anything with your shoes after the game?"

Jordan looked him in the eye. "Why, you want them?"

"I would be honored," he said.

Maybe his gall inspired MJ. Probably not. Either way, Truman had a better-than-front-row seat to Jordan's magnum opus.

He was one of the first in the building to know that Jordan would play that night when, as Bulls coach Phil Jackson gathered the team to go onto the court, Jordan finally got up and put on his jersey. He watched Jordan struggle back to the bench during timeouts; he ran Jordan a spoon for three small cups of applesauce at halftime; he heard Jordan tell doctors "F--- no" when they suggested he sit out for a while.

Truman's parents would later tease him because the broadcast showed him - a lifelong Jazz fan - patting MJ on the shoulder after he wrapped him in a towel.
When Jordan hit the clinching shot and leaned into Scottie Pippen's arms, barely able to stand, Truman estimates he was 5 feet away.
"I was like, 'I think I'm going to see this again and again.' "

After the game, the shoes were underneath Jordan's dressing table while Truman went about his work. The ball boy panicked when Charles Barkley stopped by to visit - Bryon Russell had asked for MJ's shoes earlier in the season, and Gary Payton drew flak in the 1996 Finals for doing the same. But Chuck left without them.

Jordan showered and dressed, and when the equipment manager reached down to pick the shoes up and pack them away, MJ told him to hold it. "Those are his," he said, pointing to Truman. He later signed both shoes while one of his bodyguards snapped photos. He then rubbed the top of Truman's head and left.

The next season, Truman was working at a Fanzz store when a man came in with a fat envelope stuffed with, he told Truman, $11,000. Just hand over the shoes, he said. Truman was tempted. He didn't need money, but he was 19 years old, and it was $11,000. In the end, he decided he couldn't bear to part with them, and the shoes went to the bank instead.

He's seen them just a handful of times since, and he recently came to the conclusion that they're not doing anybody a whole lot of good. "I'm 35, and 40's just right around the corner, and it seems like time goes by faster the older you get," he says. "Maybe it's just time to get those things out there."

He reached out to auction houses, which verified that his shoes were the real McCoy by checking that Jordan's suit in the photos matched what he was seen wearing earlier that night, and that the shoes bore identifiable scuff marks (which luckily they still did, even though Truman at one point narrowly prevented his mom from cleaning them off with a dish rag).
Bidding on the most iconic memorabilia from the most iconic athlete in his most iconic game will begin at $5,000 on Nov. 18 at Grey Flannel Auctions. Similar items have gone for tens of thousands of dollars.
But Truman says that to him, it's not about the money. He works in sales throughout the valley and leads a comfortable life. He's just happy to finally tell what he calls, simply, The Applesauce Story.

Randy Hollis: Jazz can't shoot straight

Back in 1971, there was a delightful little movie entitled "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight."

Based on a novel by Jimmy Breslin and featuring a fine young actor you might've heard of named Robert De Niro, "The Gang ..." was a story about a bunch of bungling hoods who tried repeatedly - and failed miserably - to whack a Mafia boss.

Well, it seems that a sequel to that movie is being filmed this year in SaltLake City, and this one stars ... wait for it ... the Utah Jazz.

Yep, when it comes to a gang that can't shoot straight, look no further than your 2013-14 Jazz ballclub. Alas, NBA opponents are apparently just as safe as that Mafia boss was in the 1971 movie.

After all, through their first six games - all losses - the Jazz were shooting just 39.4 percent as a team. They actually shot somewhat better than that in Saturday's game at Toronto, but it didn't prevent the Jazz from trailing by 26 points at halftime and by 31 at the end of the third quarter.

So far, Utah's performance this season has been even uglier than those camouniforms the Raptors were wearing in Saturday's eventual 115-91 decision.

Through that 0-6 start, two of Utah's top young players, Alec Burks and Derrick Favors, were hovering right around 41 percent from the field.

Gordon Hayward, the guy who's supposed to be their best player, was barely over 43 percent, and a couple of NBA veterans, Richard Jefferson and John Lucas III,  were shooting less than 30 percent.

Jamaal Tinsley, never really known for his shooting, was barely over 21 percent from the field, including a woeful 1-of-14 from 3-point range. Thankfully, he didn't take a shot on Saturday.

In fact, only one Jazz player, center Enes Kanter, had managed to make more than half of his shots thus far this season.

The "can't shoot straight" malady may have even affected Utah's free-throwing efficiency, as the Jazz came into Saturday's game at less than 69 percent from the foul line. And their 3-point shooting is absolutely awful, too.

Not only can the Jazz not shoot straight, they apparently are having a lot of trouble passing the ball and dribbling it straight, too.

They were averaging almost 20 turnovers per game heading into Saturday, but only committed 14 against the Raptors. What's more, they made 20-of-24 free throws, so maybe there's some light at the end of that long, dark tunnel ahead for a frustrated team that has now fallen to 0-7.

OK, we knew the Jazz youth movement was going to struggle this season, and probably struggle mightily. Most preseason predictions had them winning anywhere from 20 to 30 games, but I was feeling optimistic and picked 'em to win 30, figuring they'd win around half of their 41 home games and a fourth of their 41 road games.

Based on what we've seen so far, though, maybe that was faulty logic. And far too optimistic.

The Jazz performance has been decent at times, but absolutely abysmal on other occasions during this young season. After narrow losses at home against Oklahoma City and on the road against Phoenix, the Jazz built a double-digit halftime lead in their next home game against Houston, only to get clobbered and outscored by 27 points after intermission.

Saturday's loss to Toronto mercifully ended an 0-4 road trip which also included losses to Brooklyn, Boston and Chicago. But now they return to Utah for their next three games, and certainly there must be a win waiting for them out there somewhere, isn't there?

Maybe Monday against the Denver Nuggets? Perhaps it'll come Wednesday against those pesky Pelicans from New Orleans? Or Friday when the San Antonio Spurs come to town? (OK, probably not Friday).

Keep in mind that it's a long season, and that the Jazz have played five of their first seven games on the road.

They will get better, no doubt, provided they don't get so discouraged that they simply give up. That would make a bad situation even worse.

Some folks out there are blaming Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin. But keep in mind that Corbin's simply playing the difficult hand he was dealt.

And besides that, he's not the guy throwing up bricks or throwing the ball away for this Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight.

Rudy Gobert making most of his minutes

As the Jazz got trampled 97-73 Friday night in Chicago, 7-foot-2 center Rudy Gobert provided the silver lining, pulling down a dozen rebounds in 16 minutes.

With veteran big man Andris Biedrins sidelined by an ankle injury, the rookie Gobert has taken advantage of his opportunity to play as the third big in coach Ty Corbin's rotation.

"The way he works every day in practice, you see his focus and determination to get better," Corbin said. "When he makes a mistake, he really beats himself up because he don't want to make mistakes. It's part of growing and I really appreciate his focus and his effort every night. He'll continue to get better because he's going to push himself."

Gobert will have to beat himself up over the 2-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line. But in his first season in the NBA after playing in France, Gobert said he's adjusting."I feel better," he said. "The speed of the game is better for me."

Gobert was particularly pleased with limiting his foul trouble Friday. He had just one. "I'm getting better, trying to jump with two arms straight in the restricted area," he said.

The 1990 lottery was the first weighted lottery. New Jersey, the worst team in
the league, had 11 chances to win it. Miami, the second-worst team, had 10
chances. The last team in the lottery, 41-41 Atlanta, had one chance.
This was the formula until 1993, when Orlando (which had gone 41-41 with rookie
Shaquille O'Neal) won the lottery for the second year in a row. NBA commissioner
David Stern made no secret of the fact he was not happy.

The next year, Stern changed the lottery again. It became even more unevenly
weighted. The best team in the lottery, 41-41 Charlotte, had an 0.5 percent
chance of winning it. The worst team, 13-69, Dallas, had a 25 percent chance.
The league has expanded since then, increasing the number of lottery teams. But
this is basically the same lottery we have today.
Stern had good reasons for everything he did along the way. Any lottery is much
better than no lottery at all. Imagine if the worst team in the NBA
automatically got the No. 1 pick this season, and got to choose among Wiggins,
Parker and Randle next summer. Then you would see some SERIOUS tanking. Like,
teams would call plays for their ball boys.

But the current lottery is still significantly flawed, because it places too
great a value on being the worst team in the league. The lottery is constructed
under the assumption that if Team A has a slightly better record than Team B, it
is truly a slightly better team. This is built upon another assumption: Team A
and Team B are both trying as hard as they can, all the time.
That's not really true. There are really two tiers of lottery teams.

The half-dozen or so worst teams in the league are generally awful. They all
need the boost that comes with one of the top picks in the draft. Last year's
seventh- and eighth-worst teams, Detroit and Washington (they had the same 29-53
record) would have needed at least nine more wins to earn a playoff bid, and for
those teams, nine wins was a lot.

Detroit與 Washington(同為29勝53負)只要再九勝就有季後賽門票,但對它們來說,

The second tier of lottery teams are teams that were in the playoff hunt, or at
least had good reasons to believe they would be. Last year, Minnesota and
Philadelphia were ravaged by injuries. Portland had a playoff-quality starting
five but no bench. Teams in that tier of the lottery played most of the season
without thinking about the No. 1 pick.
So here is your solution: The seven worst teams in the league all get the same
chance of winning the lottery. Let's say they each have a 10 percent chance of
winning it. Then the league weights the rest of the lottery. The chart above
would look something like this:

Orlando      20-63   10
Charlotte    21-61   10
Cleveland    24-58   10
Phoenix      25-57   10
New Orleans  27-55   10
Sacramento   28-54   10
Detroit      29-53   10
Washington   29-53   9
Minnesota    31-51   7
Portland     33-49   5
Philadelphia 34-48   3
Toronto      34-48   2
Dallas       41-41   2
Utah         43-39   2

How would that change the behavior of teams? Well, the future is hard to predict
, or at least hard to predict accurately. But I think it would accomplish the
two primary goals of the lottery: rewarding the worst teams in the league, and
discouraging tanking.

WINN: Michigan State outshines top picks at Champions Classic
The really lousy teams would still get the best shot at the top picks. But they
would have no incentive to out-stink each other. That would mean that, when
general managers constructed their teams over the summer, they would be more
likely to add a player or two that would improve their team, because the
downside risk (losing ping-pong balls for the lottery) would not be there.

This would also help take care of the perception problem. Once the season was
underway, there would be no question: The players on the court would try to win.
So would the coaches. This would make the worst teams more watchable, which
would be good for fans, and good for the credibility of the league. There would
still be bad teams, but that's true in every league. You just don't want anybody
thinking it is good to be the worst.

The teams in the upper tier of the lottery would also be unlikely to tank. They
would have too much to gain by making the playoffs, even as a No. 8 seed: at
least two home games' worth of revenue, positive publicity with the fan base,
playoff experience for younger players, and the once-a-decade chance of pulling
an upset. That's not worth giving up for a two-percent chance at the No. 1 pick.
That's why the bottom half of the lottery would be weighted -- you can't have
teams bailing on a playoff race.

Oh, I suppose that in the final week or two of the season, teams that have been
eliminated from the playoff hunt might tank, to slightly increase their lottery
odds. But they would be tanking a game or two. They wouldn't be tanking the
whole season.

Some general managers would still decide to rebuild by trading their best
players for draft choices and young talent, and to free up salary-cap space.
But that falls under patience, not tanking. You see similar moves in
other sports.

Teams are like people; for the most part, they act out of self-interest. The NBA
just has to make sure it is not in team's best interests to tank. A simple tweak
of the lottery would help.

How I would solve the NBA's tanking problem

Under the current system, the NBA's worst team (currently the Jazz) would be
rewarded in the lottery.

One of the most successful coaches of the last 50 years just took a stand
against ... losing.
OK, perhaps the stand was not that bold. But it was the way Mike Krzyzewski said
it that stood out. He was asked about NBA teams tanking their seasons for high
draft choices, which they can use on Duke's Jabari Parker, Kansas's Andrew
Wiggins, or Kentucky's Julius Randle, all of whom made my hoops-nerd heart skip
a few beats Tuesday night.

Coach K's response:
"As an American, I wouldn't like to think that an American team would want to
lose or create situations where you would want to lose," Krzyzewski said. "I
can't even fathom -- I can't go there. I can't believe that that would happen.
Maybe I'm naive and I'm going to go read a fairy tale after this."
Coach K

The NBA has a tanking problem. As with most NBA problems, it is not quite as big
a problem as it appears. To some extent, it is a problem of perception -- there
really aren't many teams that you can fairly accuse of tanking. Some of them are
just bad.
But still, even the perception is a concern for the league. It gets to the heart
of the biggest criticism of the NBA: That teams don't take the regular-season as
seriously as teams in other sports.

I have a solution to this, and it involves a tweak to the lottery. I will
explain that in a minute. But first, let's define "tanking". It is one of those
terms that people throw around too easily, and we need to distinguish it from
patience.
PATIENCE: Management understands the team may not win in the short-term, but the
long-term plan is more important.
TANKING: The team is actively trying to lose.

This is a subtle distinction, but it is an important one. More than ever, smart
sports fans understand the value of patient management. (Fans are not so patient
with coaches, but that is another column). You don't want your team blowing its
future payroll by overpaying a player who is just past his prime. You don't want
to trade future first-round picks just to get the current team to .500. You want
management to let young pitchers develop, to find the quarterback of the future
and nurture him, to stockpile young talent and draft picks instead of just big
names. You want patience.

ROSENBERG: NBA teams can't go wrong with Wiggins, Parker, Randle

Tanking is different. Tanking is when management tries to assemble the worst
possible team, and even sabotages its lineups in an effort to lose games. In the
NBA, teams tank so they can get the highest possible draft choice, thereby
landing a franchise player. You don't see it as much in other sports because one
player means more in basketball, and there is usually a big drop-off from the
top of the NBA draft to the rest of it. There are years when the No. 5, 6, 7, 8,
9, 10, 11 and 12 picks in the NBA Draft, combined, are not worth as much as the
No. 1 pick.

Krzyzewski is right: Tanking is un-American, and rewarding it is unseemly.
And yet ... well, that is what the NBA lottery does. It rewards teams that try
to lose and punishes teams that try to win. To understand the extent of the
problem, just look at the odds for the 2013 lottery:

Orlando           20-62    25.0 %         64.3%
Charlotte          21-61   19.9              55.8
Cleveland         24-58   15.6              46.9
Phoenix            25-57   11.9              37.6
New Orleans    27-55   8.8                29.2
Sacramento      28-54   6.3                21.5
Detroit             29-53   3.6                14.3
Washington     29-53    3.5                10.7

Portland          33-49    1.1                -
Philadelphia     34-48    0.8                -
Toronto*        34-48     0.7                -
Dallas             41-41     0.6                -

*Oklahoma City actually had this choice; the Raptors dealt it to Houston, which
traded it in the package for James Harden. But for the purposes of this
discussion, let's call it Toronto's draft choice.

Imagine you are a general manager. What does that chart tell you? It says that
if you will be bad, you should be REALLY bad. The Magic, which torpedoed their
season after Dwight Howard stopped flipping coins and finally decided he really
truly did want to be traded, was six times as likely to get the top pick as the
Pistons and Wizards. Orlando also had a 64.3 percent chance of getting a
top-three pick, and a 100-percent chance of getting a top-four pick. The NBA
clearly rewarded Orlando for being awful.

Dwight

Sure, sometimes teams toward the bottom of the lottery jump to the top when the
ping-pong balls pop out on lottery night. But in the past few years, quite a few
teams looked like they were trying to get one of the three worst records in the
league.
It is now commonly accepted in the NBA: You either want to contend, or you want
to "bottom out" ... there is no virtue in simply being just "pretty good."

How did this happen? When the lottery began, in 1985, the big prize was
Georgetown's Patrick Ewing, one of the greatest college players of all-time, and
a guy who was already as marketable as almost every star in the NBA. The NBA was
worried teams would tank to get Ewing. The lottery was invented. Seven
non-playoff teams all had an equal chance at Ewing. There was no benefit to
being extra stinky.

The Knicks won that lottery, of course, launching a thousand conspiracies. The
NBA had accomplished its goal, though: It had eliminated the incentive to tank.
